More than 338,000 Americans moved to another state to retire in 2023, according to Census Bureau data analyzed by the online moving resource, Hire a Helper.
Why it matters: This represents the fourth-largest senior migration since 2000 (2015 had the most with 417,300) and the largest since 2020.
By the numbers: Florida was the top destination for retirement movers, attracting 11% of them in 2023, followed by South Carolina (10%), New Jersey (6%) and Texas (5.8%).
- California (18%) and New York (11%) had the highest share of retirees moving to new states.
- Miami-Fort-Lauderdale, FL was the #1 metro destination for retirement movers (12.3%).
